Proclaiming to be Dallas’ Most Independent Neighborhood, Bishop Arts District boasts blocks of dynamic retail, restaurant and nightlife destinations. The Oak Cliff hot spot lines up colorful storefronts one after another, each inviting locals and visitors alike to pop in and explore their offerings, whether it is a hip coffeehouse, a romantic dinner spot or a quick sweets shop.
It’s the perfect place to park and wander, passing by plenty of alluring attractions along the way. Because it can be a little overwhelming scrolling through their online directory, we’ve rounded out just one way you can make a date night out of the district.
For before-dinner drinks or a delicious locally roasted coffee, check out the area’s bookstore-bar venue space, The Wild Detectives. Its warm environment creates a gathering space for all kinds of patrons who want to enjoy refreshments, sit out on their patio adorned with string lights or play a quick board game. Whether you want to try one of their signature cocktails like Olivia’s Old Fashioned or warm up with one of their hot options like their Whiskey Chai Latte, come prepared to stay longer than you first slotted for to savor their crafted drinks. Just in case you needed another reason to go check it out, you may even snag a free drink. If you buy a book on their website and choose to pick it up in person, they will give you a drink on the house.
Lucia is arguably the most sought-after reservation in Dallas, not to mention Bishop Arts, so their owners decided to open up a sister restaurant less than 500 feet away. Macellaio came onto the Bishop Arts scene last summer and immediately stood out with their charcuterie-focused menu. It also offers more seating in a more casual environment than Lucia, so it’s easier to walk in, sans reservation, and find a spot at the bar or a table to enjoy a beautiful Italian spread. Their seasonal offerings make each night its own unique experience, and the quality of their basics will make you want to come back and try more during a second visit. Owners David and Jennifer Uygur live just down the street and are often found walking around and talking to patrons, which makes each diner feel like a valued part of the restaurant’s culture. It’s that energy, not to mention the flavorsome dishes, that will keep people coming back to enjoy their creations.
Macellaio diners are just one right turn from quality sweets with Azcar Ice Cream Company, located less than 30 feet away. After serving Cuban-style ice creams and sorbets in Miami for eight years, Suzy Batlle brought her rich creations to Dallas to join this bustling district. Her signature “farm-to-cone” flavors include treats like her famous Abuela Maria, a guava and cream cheese ice cream served with Maria crackers; Carmel Flan; Rum Cake, Guinness-Chocolate and much more. They also carry seasonal scoops and fresh fruit options for those who want to try something distinctive to Azcar. With their bright interior and friendly staff, it’s the perfect place to put a cherry on top of your night out.
