In honor of our boarding pass selection for July -- Portland -- we are highlighting this year's best states for summer road trips.
As more Americans hit the road this summer, the personal finance social media network WalletHub decided to follow up with a look at 2014's Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips.
WalletHub compared each of the 50 states to determine which state offers the most enjoyment and the least damage to one's wallet.
In the study, the company considered various conditions that can affect travelers on the road, including driving costs, lodging prices, traffic safety, weather and, of course, fun attractions for everyone.
By doing so, road-trip vacationers can budget accordingly and experience quality destinations without breaking the bank. Below is a brief overview of our findings.
Coming in at No. 1 is Oregon. Our July travel selection is Portland, which is the largest city in Oregon.
Like the well-known Texas city of Austin, Portland is knownbrfor its liberal political views, endless amount of outdoor activities (walking, brbiking, hiking, you name it) and quirky boutiques and coffee shops. UnlikebrAustin, Portland is situated in the Pacific Northwest, one of the mostbrbeautiful stretches of land in the country. Its lush greenery mixed with urbanbrlandscape, proximity to both the coast and Mount Hood and the fact that it sitsbrnear the merging of the Columbia and Willamette rivers make it a primebrdestination for tourists. Oh, and it offers tax-free shopping and is home to the world-famous VoodoobrDoughnuts. Need we say more?

And for those that are curious. Texas ranked No. 29 as the best state to take a road trip.
