Last night I had the pleasure of attending opening night of the latest in the ATT Performing Arts Center Lexus Broadway series, “In the Heights,” winner of four 2008 Tony Awards® and the 2008 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album. "In the Heights" tells the story of a dynamic neighborhood in New York's Washington Heights where residents are full of hopes and dreams for the future but struggling with changes to life in the barrio that jeopardize fulfilling those dreams.
Usnavi, played by Perry Young, is owner of the corner bodega who dreams of returning to his native Dominican Republic. Young brings the character to life with his unexpected rapping and vibrant energy as Usnavi discovers the real meaning of home. The two owners of the beauty salon that is closing and moving to the Bronx are perfectly cast. Daniela (Tauren Hagans) has a commanding larger than life voice that is the perfect foil
to her partner in styling, Carla (Katherine Brady), whose naïve attitude to life adds a lighter note to neighborhood troubles.
Mix in a full cast of amazing voices and personalities, award-winning music, the hot beat of salsa dancing backed by a meticulously crafted, authentic New York set and you've got the perfect recipe for an entertaining night at the theater. Playing now through March 25 go online and buy your tickets today from ATT Performing Arts Center.
