On April 8, an extraordinary astronomical event will cast its shadow over Texas — a total solar eclipse. This rare celestial phenomenon offers a unique opportunity for millions, especially in the Lone Star State to witness daytime darkness as the moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun.
The DFW Metroplex is perfectly positioned to offer some of the best viewing experiences in the country. Thanks to our wealth of hotels, parks and other viewing locations, the entire metropolitan area is in for a truly amazing experience.
The eclipse's path will cross 13 states from Texas to Maine, and the southern end of the path has the best chances for good viewing. According to NASA, the eclipse first touches Texas soil at 1:27 p.m. CST and exits at the Oklahoma and Arkansas borders by 1:49 p.m. CST. During its travels, the moon's shadow will accelerate from about 1,580 miles per hour to 1,850 miles per hour, offering a jaw-dropping view for everyone below.
The next North American total solar eclipse won’t happen until 2033, when it will only be visible in Canada. Those of us in the U.S. won’t get another chance to see it until 2044, so we've listed a few places to make the most of this opportunity.
