Taste Buds Kitchen
Turtle Bread event
Carrol Dragons have a full weekend ahead of themselves. From the first home football game of the season to a festival full of blues and barbecue, there's plenty to do this weekend with your family in Southlake, Grapevine and Bedford. Here are five weekend events you can go to if you're having trouble looking for things to do with the family.
The Southlake Carroll Dragons will go head-to-head against the South Grand Prairie Warriors for their season opener on Friday at the Dragon Stadium. Although kickoff is at 7 p.m., there will be plenty of tailgating fun beforehand, with the Best Fans Tailgate grilling up a good time at the center of the parking lot north of the press box. The Emerald Belles will also make an appearance after competing on national television for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” and Feedstore BBQ will prepare their satisfying sandwiches as the stadium’s newest concessionaires. Whether you’re here for the football, the Belles or the barbecue, this season opener is sure to bring a good time for all Dragons in attendance.
2nd Annual Back to School Classic Chess Tournament
It’s the second week back to school, so now’s a great time to put those big brains to use at the 2nd annual Back to School Classic Tournament. For $10 to $20, you and your child can compete in the Novice U400, Reserve U800 and Championship tournaments to see who is the best chess player. As you rack up wins, you’ll advance further into the competition, with the opportunity to be crowned chess king or queen by the end of it all. The tournament is at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Southlake Tutoring Academy at 2801 E. Southlake Blvd. Come on and bring your chess game-face on!
11th Annual Bedford Blues Festival
There’s only one thing better than barbecue and the blues, and that is both of them combined into one jam-packed weekend. Join blues musicians Boz Scaggs, JJ Grey, Mofro and several others during the 11th annual Bedford Blues Festival, a three-day festival going on all weekend across from Bedford City Hall at 1951 L. Don Dodson Dr. For $10, you’ll get to experience live music, fresh barbeque and exclusive events where you get to sample and decide who has the best barbecue around. Whether you’re here for the blues or the barbecue, the 11th annual Bedford Blues Festival will give you a Texas-sized good time.
Turtles are coming by the Taste Buds Kitchen this Saturday, only these turtles didn’t come from the water but from the oven. Come to Taste Buds Kitchen at 9 a.m. on Saturday at 2140 E. Southlake Blvd. and learn to bake fresh turtle bread with chocolate chip eyes and a soft chocolate shell. For $28, you and your child will have a chance to come and learn how to make your own turtle pastries, and of course, enjoy them after they finish baking in the oven. It’ll give a whole new meaning to the word “turtle power.”
The best way to start the week is also the best way to end a morning run: with pancakes. Come join the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers club at 7 a.m. on Sunday and 2615 Dove Loop Rd. and participate in a fun and exhilarating morning trek through the lake. And when you’re all done, enjoy the fresh pancakes that the group offers at the end of the morning exercise. You’ll have so much fun you’ll want to come back again and again to jog with the Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers. Well, that and munch on the flapjacks and maple syrup.
