Barbara Moss
Boy with Monarch on his nose
Butterflies, beauties and beasts are taking over the Metroplex this weekend. Whether you want to watch a fun new twist on Shakespeare mythology or are looking to meet Princess Cinderella, there’s plenty to do with your family this weekend.
Carroll Theater is putting on a show of the Shakespeare classic “Romeo and Juliet” but with a gender-bending twist. Instead of the boy Romeo falling in love with the girl Juliet, it’s the girl Romea falling in love with the boy Julian. Check out this fresh new take on the Shakespeare classic at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Black Box Theater at Carroll Senior High School. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each.
2019 Kiwanis Butterfly Festival
Happiness takes flight this weekend at the 2019 Kiwanis Butterfly Festival, which is going on Saturday and Sunday at the Southlake Town Square pavilion. Explore more than 600 square feet of a landscape mesh tent filled with hundreds of colorful Texas butterflies, all while munching down on a delicious watermelon. Come and socialize with these beautiful little critters before they’re set free at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12.
Want to leave your kids somewhere safe and fun as you and your significant other take a night to yourselves? For $95, you can drop your kids off at Tempest Freerunning Academy at 8 p.m. on Saturday at 280 Commerce St. so they can play games, eat food and win prizes all night long. When they’re all done, come by and pick them up at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Be sure to give them a sleeping bag, a pillow and pajamas just in case they get sleepy!
Disney’s 'Beauty and the Beast Jr.'
Belle and Beast are coming to the Metroplex this weekend, and they’re retelling their story for a whole new generation of children. Come to the Dallas Children’s Theater at 1:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. Sunday at 5938 Skillman St. and watch their weekend debut of their live musical production that runs until October 27. Ticket prices range from $15 to $40. Your family won’t want to miss this magical retelling of the tale as old as time.
Want to unleash your inner artist and enjoy an exciting afternoon full of painting? Join the Sunshine Glaze Creative Studio at 2 p.m. on Sunday at 150 N. Main St. and paint a canvas creation all your own during this fun and family-friendly event! Children ages six and up are allowed, but adults can participate along with their child too if they want to get paint all over their hands as well. Don't wait: Come to Kids Canvas and become the next young Vincent Van Gogh!
