When it comes to updating your home, nothing compares to the facelift of new flooring. Think back to any house renovation show. If you think they’re going to demolish walls but leave the flooring as-is, you’re terribly mistaken. Floors can be where the biggest changes happen, especially if your home is a bit on the older side. However, updating floors throughout your home can be daunting due to the insurmountable amount of options. Even once you choose between wood, carpet, tile or other types, there are hundreds of possibilities within each category. With that in mind, we are sticking with two major trends: gray hardwood floors and geometric-patterned carpets. We could feel a lot of you tense up at that last option, so just bear with us.
Going Gray
In case you missed it, the last few years of interior design trends have been ruled by shades of gray. If you’ve been holding out because it seemed like a passing phase, we’re here to tell you it’s safe to hop on board. Gray isn’t going anywhere. If you’re aiming for a modern, chic aesthetic that can also fare well with rustic decor, then gray hardwood floors are your answer. While the airy, light looks are also taking off, who wants to keep up with white floors? Whether you go with a cool or warm gray tone, it’s guaranteed to hide dirt better, so that’s a small perk as well. Plus, that minimalist look of all white still pairs fine with a gray hardwood floor. We’re calling this a win-win. The aforementioned plethora of options are still at play here, so even if you’ve settled on hardwood and gray, you still need to pick the exact shade, the width of the plank and the type and texture of wood. We recommend wider planks (5 inches or more) for a more contemporary look.
Whimsically Woven
We’ll preface with this: If you’re going for timeless, this look isn’t for you. And, if you’re looking to cover a lot of space rather than add an accent to your flooring, we advise sticking with the advice above. However, if you have some space to play with and you’re feeling a bit bold, it’s time to bust out the geometric-patterned carpet. Geometric shapes have also found their way into home decor sections and our hearts but use them sparingly. If you want to take the easy way out, there are plenty of beautiful rugs following this trend. But imagine the wow factor of your home office’s floors looking simultaneously whimsical and modern. If it’s a smaller room and not the focal point of your home, feel free to play!
