Coming from an almost exclusively news background, I never thought that I would do an internship at a magazine, let alone an arts and lifestyle-focused magazine. News has always been my niche in journalism, and I didn’t ever think I would go beyond that. But Southlake Style approached me for this internship after finding me online, and I am so glad they did. It was so nice getting out of news for a while and exploring something different within the world of journalism.
My internship at Southlake Style has been so great and I loved working there. While it definitely took some time to get used to the arts and lifestyle side of journalism, I really enjoyed the opportunity to get out of my news bubble and learn more about arts & life.
At Southlake Style, there was a lot of freedom to make the internship how I wanted. I was able to work on my photography skills through photographing multiple events for the magazine and always had the opportunity to pitch story ideas.
Learning about magazine production was another great aspect of this internship. I have almost exclusively worked with newspapers, not magazines. This internship opened my eyes to how magazine production works, from scheduling print content, proofing the magazine and working with advertisers and their specific advertisements. It was so interesting to see the process of making the actual magazine.
If you’re considering Southlake Style as a possible internship, I encourage you to apply. An internship at Southlake Style really can be anything you want as there is freedom to pitch ideas and try new things. And beyond a great work environment and friendly people, there are also two office dogs, golden retrievers Sparky and Rory, who are literally the best boys.
Whether it was photography or helping with print pieces, I was able to try new things and expand my journalism horizons through the course of this internship and I encourage anyone interested to give Southlake Style a shot.
