Relay For LifebrSouthlake Celebrates its Fifth Year
Relay for Life Southlake returns to Carroll High School forbrits fifth year. The annual all-night event is expecting more than 2,000brparticipants from Southlake and neighboring communities. Relay For LifebrSouthlake takes place on the football field and back parking lot of CarrollbrHigh School. The relay committee organizes the event to include a midway areabrof games, activities and food while the relay is underway. An entertainmentbrstage is set up on the field to entertain teams walking the track. Organizers saybrthey will move campsites to the football field rather than outside the trackbrthis year in an effort to capture the full energy of the event. Additionally,brteam fundraising activities will take place at campsites to allow teams tobrcontinue to raise funds with fun activities that others can share.
Durham IntermediatebrSpelling Bee Champ Advances to State
Durham Intermediate sixth grader Bradley Lund is once againbrthe National Geographic Bee Champion. He is qualified to participate at thebrstate level of the National Geographic Bee. One winner for each state andbrterritory will advance to the national competition, which will be held thisbrmonth in Washington, D.C.
Carroll Soccer TeamsbrHeaded to Playoffs
The Carroll Dragon boys soccer and the Carroll Lady Dragonswill begin their trek to playoffs. The Dragons are focusing on the Class 5Abrbi-district playoffs. Dragon senior Walker Beasley scored the winning goalbragainst Haltom, which put the Dragons in position to continue to district play.brCarroll finished as the No. 3 seed in 4-5A, going 6-3-5. The Lady Dragons finishedbrthe regular season with a 4-0 victory against Haltom, earning the District 4-5Abrchampionship. Carroll finished 13-1 overall and are 19-1-1 on the season.
Former DragonbrQuarterback Retires From NFL
Former Carroll Dragon star quarterback Greg McElroy isbrretiring from the National Football League. McElroy played for the New YorkbrJets and Cincinnati Bengals. Upon his retirement, McElroy plans to work as anbrSEC Network analyst. The network will launch in August. Before his NFL career,brMcElroy played at Alabama and was the starting quarterback on the CrimsonbrTide's BCS Championship team in 2009.
Carroll DragonbrSisters Compete at Taekwondo Championship
Carroll students Jessica Neal and Cassandra Neal competed atbrthe Texas State USAT Taekwondo Championship. Jessica, a Carroll Elementarybrfourth grader, won her third consecutive gold medal for the NTA ColleyvillebrTaekwondo Competitive team under the direction of Master Jonathan Hardwick. Herbrsister Cassandra, a Dawson Middle School eighth grader, took third place in thebrWorld Class Sparring Division in the Texas State USAT Taekwondo Championship.brWith this finish, Cassandra qualifies for the World Class National Olympic teambrat the National Taekwondo tournament in San Jose in July.

Emerald Belles SweepbrNationals
The Emerald Belles were named national champions at the MAbrNational Drill Team Competition. The team won first place overall in theirbrdivision, which earned them their title along with national championshipbrjackets. The Belles also took first place in High Kick and Lyrical and secondbrplace in Jazz. The Belles officers won the highest awards at the competition,brreceiving first place in all three of their dances and first place overall. Thebrofficers were also awarded national champions and will receive rings. In the solobrcategory, four of the Belles placed in the finals. In the 11/12 division, LaceybrMunoz won second place, and Anna Grace Pruitt took fifth place. In the 9/10brdivision, Jessica Bowman was awarded eighth place and Claire Berutti ninthbrplace. In the duet category, Peyton Faltys and Claire Berutti took third place.

TEXpress Lanes Openbrto Manage Traffic Congestion
The Texas Department of Transportation opened the TEXpressbrLanes on the DFW Connecter as a tool for managing congestion. The lanes are onbra four-mile segment of S.H. 114 from just west of S.H. 26 to east ofbrInternational Parkway — near the Dallas Fort Worth InternationalbrAirport. The TEXpress Lanes will run parallel to fully reconstructed mainbrlanes as well as frontage roads, offering drivers the option to pay a variablebrtoll. However, the connector will open at zero cost for a temporarybrintroductory period, which will allow the traveling public to try the lines,brwhile providing TxDOT an opportunity to continue testing tolling equipment.brLater, the incentive period will change and tolls will be charged. Southlake Carroll hired a five-time champion volleyballbrcoach to lead the Lady Dragons. Ryan Mitchell will take over after buildingbrLovejoy High School into a state powerhouse, making him one of the state'sbrpremier volleyball coaches. Lovejoy High School won five consecutive statebrchampionships in Class 3A and 4A over seven seasons under Mitchell'sbrleadership. Mitchell went 315-41 at Lovejoy and led the program to its firstbrstate title in 2008, igniting a run of dominance in 3A. Mitchell earnedbrnumerous state and national accolades throughout Lovejoy High School's fourbrconsecutive 3A titles.
