Junior wide receiver Landon Samson scores a touchdown during the game against Byron Nelson on Oct. 22. The Dragons would go on to defeat the Bobcats 57-21 to win their first district game.
Southlake Carroll’s district dominance continues. The Dragons advanced to 2-1 on the season after winning their first district game against Byron Nelson on Thursday night.
The Dragon offense shined with Owen Allen rushing for 156 yards and two touchdowns — bringing his season totals to 524 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. Quarterback Quinn Ewers also had a great night, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Landon Samson — our Player of the Week, sponsored by Thomas & Sharon Michael | DFW Elite Realty — proved his talents in an impressive showing. The junior caught for 136 yards and two touchdowns, filling in nicely for senior wide receiver Brady Boyd, who’s currently out with a wrist injury.
Fellow wide receivers Josh Spaeth and Will Hosey also shined — together they caught for a total of 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Though the Dragons did not play last week following a positive COVID-19 test, the Dragon defense experienced definite improvement in their performance. Sophomore defensive back Logan Anderson is starting to make a name for himself with eight tackles and one fumble recovery while knocking down four passes. Cinque Williams also continued to show up and stand out, making seven tackles, knocking down a pass and causing a fumble.
Before the fourth quarter even began, the Dragons led the Bobcats 43-14, allowing Quinn to take the rest of the night off. That didn’t stop the Dragon offense, however. Senior quarterback Hunter Holden completed all four of his passes for 51 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a score.
Overall, both the Dragon defense and offense worked great together. They held the Bobcats to just 21 points and 259 yards of total offense while the Dragons piled up 57 points and 486 yards of their own on offense.
With their schedule back on track after last week’s cancellation, Southlake Carroll will again face another familiar opponent in next week’s game. The Dragons are set to take on district rival Keller at Dragon Stadium next week.
The Indians are currently 1-3 on the season, following a 21-17 loss on Friday to Keller Central, a fellow district rival. Should history repeat itself next week, Southlake Carroll is in for a good night. In the last two seasons, the Dragons have outscored the Indians 114-51. Breaking that down, Southlake Carroll won 58-37 in 2018 and 56-14 in 2019.
Tickets for next week’s game, which will also be Pink Out Night, can be bought online. Masks and social distancing are required at Dragon Stadium.
