The Southlake Dragons have hit yet another home-run with "The Dallas Morning News," with their coach and two of their players being named among SportsDayHS’s best of the year.
Having previously been named as the Dallas Morning News’ 2017 Coach of the Year, Head Coach Larry Vucan was once again named as the 2019 Coach of the Year after leading the Dragons through another successful season that ended with back-to-back state championships.
According to "SportsDayHS," the Dragons opened the season 1-6 but ended the season with 18 straight wins, including prevailing against Fort Bend Ridge Point 17-0 in the state championship game earlier this month.
The Dragons have now won 30 of their last 31 playoff games, even after they lost over 20 seniors and didn’t return any starters from the 2018 team.
Also recognized was Southlake Carroll senior Cutter Sippel and junior Brandon Howell, who were respectively recognized as an outstanding second-team pitcher and third-team outfielder. Sippel went 12-1 with a 1.85 ERA and had 76 strikeouts, while Howell hit .369 with 31 RBI’s and four home runs.
The sports staff also recognized several other players in their all-district listing. Those players include:
• Offensive Player of the Year: junior Cade Manning
• Newcomer of the Year: sophomore Ryan Pehrson
• Senior Austin Hale
• Junior Jaxon Osterberg
• Senior Joe Steeber
• Senior Cutter Sippel
• Junior Homer Bush
