Season Update
Gold medal finishesbrand a No. 2 state ranking
It's hard to replace experience on any team, especially onebrthat graduated a Rolex All-American by the name of Matt Gilchrest (he’s now atbrAuburn) and Corbin Kasten. However, head coach Matt Glenn and the Dragon boysbrgolf team seem to keep rolling along like a dead-eyed putt. Despite having onlybrone senior on the roster, the Dragons are the second-ranked team in the statebrbehind perennial power Austin Westlake — very impressive for a young team thatbris just getting started.
The Dragons finished in the topbrthree in a number of tournaments on the season. With the constant improvementbrin terms of tournament finishes, the recent successes Carroll has been awardedbrshould bode well as they plan to make moves with district tournaments fastbrapproaching.
The boys team started off 2014brfinishing fifth in the 8th annual Aggie Invitational. Since theirbrfifth-place finish, Southlake has placed higher in its last three events, brfinishing second at the Play To the Max Memorial along with a gold medal forbrthe black team at the Lubbock Regional Preview, followed by another Black Teambrgold medal at the Jim McClean Invitational.
About the team
Placed with the burden of replacing six seniors, this year'sbrDragons are paced by a confident group of underclassmen. At the front of thebrpack is sophomore Colin Kober, who has assumed the role while posting anbraverage score of 75.43 per round. Kober, brwho placed first at the Junior All Stars at Gray Plantation and 4that the TPC Four Seasons is mentally tough and proves it each outing. He postedbrhis best outing of the season — a 65 on day two of the Lubbock Regional Preview.brColin Hamilton, a junior, also had an impressive 71 on the final round of thebrsame tournament. Statistically, juniorbrGeorge Gardner ranks right behind Kober with an average score of 76 — his bestbrperformance — and a score of 72 at the second round of the LubbockbrRegional. Gardner has placed first in the TJGT Oakmont and at the ChampionsbrCircle TJGT. Tied for third on the team in scoring average is sophomore MasonbrGreenberg and the coach’s son, junior Hunter Glenn (76.57). All the early season’sbrbest performances led to a gold medal finish for the Dragon Black team. ThebrDragon Green team wasn’t far behind with a third place finish. If the playersbrcontinue to develop at their current rate, they will have a fine run through thebrdistrict tournament set for early April.
